Difficulty and permadeath
Two settings, four combinations, and one of them is hard to undo.
You choose two independent settings when you start.
| Setting | Options |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Normal or Hard |
| Mode | Casual (fallen units return after the battle) or Classic (they are gone for good) |
What Hard changes
- Every rewind costs Divine Sand. On Normal, rewinding is free and unlimited.
- Blessings cost more Sand — Kalla doubles from 20 to 40.
- Enemy AI is described as less forgiving.
Because rewinds and Blessings draw on the same Sand, Hard is less about tougher enemies and more about a tighter budget for fixing mistakes.
One guide reports that difficulty can only be lowered, from Hard to Normal, at the Shrine of Causality in the Obelisk Chamber. Others say both settings can be changed later. Until that is settled, pick as if the choice were final.
- There is no third difficulty above Hard at launch.
- Fortuna's rewind works in Classic, which makes permadeath much more forgiving than in older games.
- Foresight before a battle shows the map, the enemy types and a suggested level.
Unsure? Start on Hard. You can step down if it is not fun, but you can never step up without starting over.
